A blog of our progress as we build a shipping container house for a home on our peaceful Texas Hill Country farm and vineyard. Our plan is to exist off the grid using a solar panels power station, wind turbines, batteries, inverters, and the like for our electricity. We have rain gutters and barrels in place for most of our water needs along with a large pond that stayed full even throughout the recent Texas droughts. We invite you to grab a big ole cup of coffee and follow along in the fun!

Nice fireplace. How hot does it get on sides and top? I'm considering placing it into a wall cutout between bedroom and bath. Do you have a side shot? How many inches is the base recessed from the front, rear and sides?
ReplyDeleteI would leave at least 6 inches clearance on the front and back facing the openings, and 4-6 inches on the sides and top. If the opening is opened all the way, the flames can lick the top of the inside of the fireplace. We keep it closed about 50%. It gets very warm to the touch on the black metal while the fuel is burning, but I'm not afraid to have my 3 year old toddler around it or anything. It would not scorch the skin or wall if it were to touch accidentally, for example.
